Recipes with Biltong
Now we’re not talking about how to make your own biltong, there are plenty of places offering this, what we’re talking about is using biltong to make other foods more interesting to the palate. Biltong is a delicious and healthy snack at any time of the day or night but add that flavour to a dip, salad or… well just about anything makes it even more exciting.
Our initial plan was to share a traditional South African biltong recipe with you on a monthly basis, unfortunately due to other commitment this fell out, so we are now going to add recipes as we find them. If you have a homemade recipe that you’ve created, or discovered with biltong, let us know and we’ll ad it to the website.

Biltong Treats
Ingredients
- 270g self-raising flour
- 5ml baking powder
- 5ml mild mustard powder
- 1ml cayenne pepper
- 1 ml dried thyme
- 250ml biltong, grated or finely chopped
- 125g cold butter, cut into cubes
TOPPING
- 200ml biltong, grated or finely chopped
- 30ml freshly chopped chives
- 50ml mature Cheddar cheese, grated
- 30ml Parmesan cheese, grated
- 30ml blue cheese, crumbled
- 1 large egg
Method
Preheat oven to 220°C.
Sift flour, baking powder and mustard powder into a mixing bowl. Stir in the cayenne pepper, thyme and biltong.
Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Gradually stir in enough cold water to make a stiff dough. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface until it is approximately 2.5cm thick and transfer to a 36 x 26 x 5cm baking tin.
Mix together all the topping ingredients except the egg and set aside. Whisk the egg with a little water and brush the dough. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the prepared dough. Bake in a preheated oven for 15 minutes, then allow to cool. Cut into small squares and serve.
